A few quick tips to keep in mind beforehand to help make sure your shoot is one of the best photo experiences you’ve ever had.
A few quick tips to keep in mind beforehand to help make sure your shoot is one of the best photo experiences you’ve ever had.
CLOTHING
If you feel good in it, bring it. There is no limit to the number of changes per session so bring what you can, just keep in mind the time we have based upon the package you’ve chosen. Come with several changes of outfits -- Mostly casual (jeans, shorts, skirts, sweatshirts, sweaters & T-shirts are excellent) and at least one outfit that’s more formal if possible, perhaps a dress (The classic black dress is usually a safe bet & is rather timeless, but prom-type dresses can also work). If you have a favorite jacket (leather or denim, for example) bring it along. Feel free to also bring any outfit that might represent activities or sports that are a part of your life.
Solid colors tend to work best. Try to avoid flashy neon colors, stripes and busy patterns.
SHOES
Most shots look best with bare feet since shoes tend to “date” a photo. However, there are times when shoes are appropriate -- If you’re a rock climber and you bring along your helmet, ropes, harness & carabiners, it would look silly if you then wore a pair of scuba diving flippers. Also, if your a gymnast it would look absolutely ridiculous to slip on cowboy boots along with your leotard. If that’s what you want, though, I’ll shoot it.
ACCESSORIES
Put some thought into those little extras you might want included -- Musical instruments, hats & caps, sports equipment, sunglasses, jewelry, trophies, even your favorite stuffed animal.
If you wear eyeglasses and wish to be photographed with them on, it’s a good idea to try and get ahold of a pair that has no lenses (consult with your optometrist for a loaner pair).
HAIR & MAKEUP
Hair: Your hair should be done in a style that is familiar to you, something that you actually wear often. Don’t try a radically different look for the shoot and don’t get it cut the day of or the day before. There should be at least a week between having your hair done and the shoot -- It gives your hair time to “relax” and fill in.
Face: Natural or “evening” makeup work best. Make sure that it is properly blended, especially where your neck and face meet. After makeup application, a matte powder will help reduce shininess and bright reflections.
Eyes: Avoid heavy or brightly colored shadow. Make sure mascara is neat and without clumps. Eyeliner is fine, just don’t go overboard. If it’s too heavy it tends to make the eyes look smaller.
Lips: Lipstick is good. A little lip liner is okay if you know how to apply it properly.
Nails: Keep them neat, clean and with neutral/natural tones. Bright colors can attract attention away from you, the subject.
MISCELLANEOUS
Try and get plenty of rest the night before your scheduled shoot. If you get a pimple the night before don’t sweat it, I’ll take care of it and most other blemishes in post processing. Don’t worry about braces either -- It requires more work, but they too can be removed after the shoot.
Try not to do any tanning for a couple of days prior to your shoot. Tan lines can usually be removed or have their appearance at least reduced, but that costs extra. On the other hand, some people like tan lines.
I have access to lots of different types of music, but if you have something that you particularly like make sure you bring it. You can even make a mix CD of your favorites and I’ll put it in.
